Porsche unveiled the Mission S on Thursday, October 15, 2026, on a pier in Queens, New York, with the Manhattan skyline behind it. Porsche calls it a "vision model," which is a concept, not a production car. The company says it previews a new mid-engined super sports car platform that will sit above the 911. Edmunds reports that there are no confirmed engine details or specs yet.
What Porsche announced
The location was chosen on purpose. Porsche says the first pictures of the mid-engined 550 Spyder on that same pier went around the world in 1953.
Porsche chairman Michael Leiters said the Mission S represents a mid-engined super sports car platform positioned above the 911, "not as a one-off hypercar, but as a permanent and versatile addition to our customer offering." Porsche says it is planning, for the first time, a permanently available super sports car offer above the 911.
The car follows the company's October 7 Capital Markets Day. There, Porsche announced it is developing a mid-engined super sports car platform that will enable a model line above the 911. That presentation was titled Sportwagenschmiede '35, and the Mission S is part of the same strategic realignment.
Design and cockpit, as Porsche describes it
Porsche ties the styling to its own history. It says the round headlights and fenders recall the 911, the flat front takes its cue from the GT1, and the roofline under the rear wing recalls the 959. The cooling solution is reminiscent of the 917's radiator fan, and the car has a fully integrated active rear wing.
The wheels are a new design based on the 928's "dial design." Edmunds reports they are 21 inches at the front and 22 inches at the rear, and that the rear has stacked quad exhaust tips.
Inside, Porsche describes five round instruments behind the steering wheel, with an analogue-needle rev counter in the center. Edmunds adds that the tachometer has an 8,000-rpm redline and that the car has steering wheel paddle shifters.
Porsche says it deliberately left out a permanently integrated center display. In its place is a retractable smartphone system compatible with MagSafe. The show car's colors are Firn White Metallic, Light Red Metallic and Black Chrome, with Special Black inside.
What is still unknown
Edmunds reports that an eight-cylinder engine is rumored but not confirmed. It also says Porsche indicated the car can offer gas or hybrid powertrains, not electric, and manual or automatic transmissions. Edmunds says the Mission S does not wear the final design of the production car. Porsche's Tobias Sühlmann, Vice President Style, says the design direction is one "we will soon be translating into our future product portfolio."
What it means for cars on the road today
Nothing in the Porsche release or the Edmunds report ties the Mission S to the engine, platform or parts of any current or older model. Porsche describes the platform as new. Our reading is that owners of 911, Boxster, Cayman, Cayenne or Panamera models have nothing to act on here.
Porsche's strategy document does say the company wants to emphasize the DNA of the 911 even more strongly across all model lines. It also plans about 20 percent fewer model variants. Neither of those is a statement about specific hardware on existing cars.
