Audi Chassis Code Cheat Sheet: B, C, D, Q, and 8-Series Decoded

Every Audi chassis code that matters, what it actually is, what engine and transmission lived under it, and the one thing every buyer asks. A reference you can bookmark.

Audi's chassis code system is simpler than BMW's once you get it, but Audi made the mess worse by running two parallel systems: the VW Group platform letter (B, C, D) for the sedans and the internal "Typ" number (8L, 8P, 4L, 42, etc.) for pretty much everything else. Then they threw in F5 partway through. Here's every code that matters, what it was, and what every buyer wants to know.

The A4 / A5 family (B-Series, plus F5)

The B-platform is the 3-Series competitor, shared with the A5 coupe after 2008 and the Q5 SUV.

The A4 allroad lives on the B8 (2013-2016) and B9 (2017+) platforms in North America — Audi skipped an allroad for the B5, B6, and B7.

The S4 B8 (2010-2016) ditched the V8 for a supercharged 3.0T. The S4 B9 (2018+) ditched the supercharger for a single-turbo 3.0T TFSI. Different engines, different problems.

The RS4 B7 was the US-market V8 (420 hp, 8,250 rpm redline, 6-speed manual only). The RS4 B9 Avant was never sold in North America. RS5 B8 used the same 4.2L V8 as the RS4 B7.

The A6 / A7 family (C-Series)

The C-platform is the 5-Series/E-Class competitor. Runs longer and bigger than the B-platform with more available engines.

The A6 allroad was built on C5 (1999-2005 as "allroad quattro") and C6 (2006-2011 as "A6 allroad quattro"), plus C7 globally. Never sold new in the US during the C7 run — US got the A7 Sportback instead.

The C7 RS6 Avant was not sold in North America. If someone tries to sell you one, it's a gray-market import. The C7 RS7 Sportback was — 560 hp standard, 605 hp Performance.

The A8 / S8 family (D-Series)

The full-size Audi flagship. Biggest engines, biggest repair bills.

The D2 W12 was a European-market curiosity — only about 750 built. Ignore it unless you're chasing unicorns.

The D3 S8 runs the 5.2 V10 derived from the Lamborghini Gallardo. Sounds biblical. Needs the timing chain work that scares most shops. Budget tool.

The D4 S8 Plus was 605 hp — factory tune of the same 4.0T that went into the RS7 Performance. Sleeper tier.

The A3 / S3 / RS3 family (8-series, the compact codes)

Confusingly, Audi uses the same 8-series numbering for A3 and TT, but different numbers.

The 8P A3 3.2 VR6 with DSG is a collector's item today — only US Audi ever fitted the narrow-angle VR6 to an A3.

The 8V RS3 (sedan to US in 2017) is the only production car ever to run the 2.5T inline-5 in America. Same engine as the TT RS 8S and 8J. Audi Expert (YouTube) goes deep on this one.

The TT family (8-series again)

The 8N TT 3.2 VR6 was the first production car to get a dual-clutch transmission (DSG). Historical footnote.

The 8J TT RS is the bargain RS — inline-5 turbo, 360 hp, 6-speed manual available. Prices are climbing.

The R8 family (42, 4S)

The Type 42 R8 with gated 6-speed manual and the 4.2 V8 is the one that collectors want. Production numbers are low, and the gated lever is iconic. The R tronic (single-clutch automated manual) is awful and drags down value. S tronic came later and is good.

No V8 on the Type 4S — V10 only from 2016 onward.

The 8R SQ5 (2014-2017 US) runs a supercharged 3.0T. Rare variant, strong cult following.

The 4L Q7 3.0 TDI is the one with the dieselgate buyback history. Paperwork matters.

The 4M Q7 shares its platform with the Bentley Bentayga, Lamborghini Urus, Porsche Cayenne, and VW Touareg. Parts interchange is excellent, mechanic knowledge is wide.

Transmission cheat codes

  • Multitronic — CVT that showed up on B6/B7/C5/C6 front-drive cars. Avoid. Known to fail and be uneconomical to fix.
  • Tiptronic — Torque-converter auto. Made by ZF (8-speed) or Aisin (6-speed, 8-speed on Q7 4L). Generally reliable with fluid changes every 60-80K miles.
  • S tronic — Dual-clutch (DSG-derived). Requires fluid + filter service every 40K. Skipped service kills the mechatronic.
  • R tronic — Single-clutch automated manual on R8 42 only. Terrible in traffic. Many owners pay to retrofit S tronic.
  • Manual — Gated shifter on V8 RS4 B7, R8 42, some TTs and S4s. Value premium.

The platform lineage

Everything Audi from the mid-2010s onward rides on the MLB (longitudinal) or MQB (transverse) platform. MLB gets you A4 through Q8, R8, Porsche Panamera/Cayenne, Bentley Bentayga. MQB gets you A3, TT, and the Q3. The MLB Evo is the current large-car platform (B9/F5/C8/D5/Q7 4M/Q8).

Knowing the platform tells you what else the parts fit. Knowing the chassis code tells you what engine it came with.
